How I Stay in Shape

Photographer unknown.  This makes me sad because it is a beautiful photograph.

A few readers have asked me how I keep in shape.  Although I do not believe I'm in the best of form I thought I'd share my working out habits with you.  Forgive me if it's boring, but here's a typical schedule of my "activities".  Since my schedule right now only allows one ballet class I've really gotten into yoga to stay flexible and in tune with my body.  I'll be taking more ballet and modern classes in April.  Also, it's the off season for the dance company I'm in but we typically rehearse a few times per week and right before we perform we rehearse three to four times a week.

Monday
Treadmill 45 minutes
Yoga class 1 hr 15 mins
Teaching 3 hours
Yoga one hour (if I feel up to it!)

Tuesday
Treadmill 45 minutes
Ballet class hour and a half
Teaching 1 hr 30 mins

Wednesday
Treadmill 45 minutes
Teaching 2 hours
Yoga 1 hour

Thursday
Treadmill 45 minutes
Yoga 1 hour 15 minutes
Teaching 4 hours

Friday
Treadmill 45 minutes
Yoga 1 hr 15 mins
Teaching 3 hours

Saturday
Treamill (however long I have the energy)
Rehearsal 5-8 hours

Sunday
Day of Rest

Listen to your body!

When I'm not feeling well or I'm really tired I might break up the treadmill sessions in two.  Sometimes I'll go for an entire hour if I feel up to it.  I just really try to listen to my body and not push it beyond reason.  Also, it's my job to stay in shape so if the working out seems excessive to you just remember that my monthly membership to a yoga studio is considered an investment and since I am a private contractor it's also a tax write off.

How often do you work out?  Are you getting ready for the swim suit season or are you "meh" about it?

  1. Very impressive workout schedule. I wish I was in a line of work that required fitness. So often I'm in retail which leaves you feeling exhausted, gross and you can't even catch classes if you want to since the hours are so weird.

Oh, I loved your flip flop article and it's so true! I wore my flip flops for the first time this season and my lower back is killing me. They are getting tossed and I'm going to have to find some other sandals.. :-(

  7. Tiffany, you are too awesome for words. I'd just love to hang out with you for a week and do everything you do. I'm so impressed. I've been thinking about adding a ballet class once a week to my schedule; I think you just convinced me to go for it.

  8. Wow, your regime is so enviable! I rarely get my recommended 30 mins of exercise a day, though I am partial to several sessions of Yoga and Pilates during the week, as well as at least 1 hardcore spinning class. I just love how Yoga is so relaxing yet challenging mentally and physically!
I also find lots of walking (which I do at least do regularly) is good for the health, too.

  9. My working out consists of running after my kids at the park, library, and yard.

My quickest way to thin is to eat less, smaller portions.

But yeah, I need to walk and yoga more. Most def.

  10. Goodness Tiffany - you'll stay in shape forever, even if you didn't move one limp from now on anymore, I guess. I do 10 minutes yoga in the morning and try to play tennis a few times a week. When I lived in Berlin (Germany) I used to cycle everywhere, but the English countryside is not bicycle friendly.

  13. I love reading your work out schedule, this is so very inspiring! I take a barre method class, you dancers have all the right moves! If I listened to my body, I would be totally meh all the time (and huge) so I try to work out about 3x a week, this should really be 5.Thanks!

  14. Nice work! Many dancers are afraid of cross-training, and of resting. How many dance teachers have warned that running makes your thighs big?? In fact, cross-training with aerobic exercise and resistance training is an awesome way the stay in shape and improve your stamina. Excellent point about the tax write-off, too!

  16. I am like you, I go to the gym 6 days a week usually. The past 3 weeks have been a medley of being sick for one week, trying to get back on track, only to be slowed down due to Lovely Sacramento's seasonal allergies. When I was 16 I had this book http://bit.ly/aF9Uiy Thinking of maybe getting it again. Although I hate to change eating habits. Do you watch what you eat? (so jealous of how much yoga you do, I miss it)

  17. Thanks for the comment!! I think you said it perfectly: there's so much on my mind I don't know what I'd do.

On another note... REALLY beautiful photograph. You're workout sched is awesome! I love yoga, but sometimes I get bored and usually I giggle too much. Haha. But, it's such a great release -- and such a great mind cleanser. :)

  19. Hello - I have just recently found your blog and I love it.
I run around after three children but I also take time out for me to do a body balance class each week (a cross between tai-chi and pilates) which makes you really stretch but also calms the mind!

  21. I love the treadmill, although I already do a lot of walking throughout the city. So lately, I've been doing a lot of crunches & sit ups - definitely getting ready for bikini season! haha

  29. Hello!
I wish I could work out like you do. I really need to hit the gym this term. I'd like to swim at least three times a week, but chlorine does terrible things to my hair.

  30. Oy. You are my idol. I hate to work out. Really hate and despise it, and thank god I "don't need to." I should for my health, but I'm being a total slacker about it until I turn 29.

  31. Wow! Impressive! Other than dancing 7+ hours a week (which isn't that much, but I'm still in school and it's waaay too expensive to do more than that) I don't do any form of other exercise :P. Oh well, I don't really need to I suppose, I'm pretty healthy already.
