What Are You Meant To Do?

A few posts ago we talked about fears and our future (or pasts). You guys are so inspiring! Lenore from Lenorenevermore said, "Do not put off doing the things that are important to you until the conditions are ideal. They'll never be ideal. Do it now!"

Recently my friends and I went out to celebrate Lean, a friend who auditioned for So, You Think You Can Dance and Pilobolus, one of the biggest dance companies in the world. After five rounds of Pilobulus auditions he was one of seven men left standing.  He's short and Asian while everyone else was tall and white.

It was obvious he wasn't what they were looking for but they liked him so much they kept him until the end. After the auditions this is what he put on his Facebook page:

"So I was this close of getting the dream job of a lifetime... I guess it wasn't my time yet... Nevertheless I had the greatest experience and learned so much. It only confirms how much I am meant to dance."

Sometimes I struggle with the question, "What am I meant to do?"  You are all creative, ambitious, and open people so I thought I'd ask...

Do you know what you are meant to do and, if so, when did you realize that?

I really just feel that I'm meant to do what I love; and I love a variety of things. I think that, as long as I'm happy in what I'm doing, it's what I'm meant to do. :)

That's a good question.

I think I am meant to do my best. I realized that through my divorce, you cannot control others, you just need to do your very best. It wont always be perfect but we can pick ourselves right back up again :)

I'm not sure what I'm meant to do but I know it's something where I create. Whether it's creating a photograph, designs or a store, I know creating is essential to me. I'm still working on narrowing it down!

Love your posts lately! They've been incredibly inspiring!

Such a good question. I think I meant to work in a career that helps the environment and also creates beauty. I've felt this in my heart forever.

Being my my kid's mom. I knew i felt like something was missing before, and I feel fulfilled everyday. Even with the screaming and the poopy diapers and the snotty nose... I feel like I am doing what I am meant to do- and it is the most peaceful feeling ever!

this is hard question for me, i love to do a lot of things, but deciding what to pursue as a career really haunts me. I guess we're all supposed to pursue what we love a much as we can, and hope for the best. For me, I know it's something to do with acting, filmmaking, theater, and beauty :)

Some of the best advice my dad ever gave me: "Never end up." People always say things like, "Who knows where I'll end up one day, what I'll end up doing." My dad is in his 60s and he's been a pilot, a banker, a husband, a father, a student, a professor. And now he's going back to school to become a writer. He's my inspiration.

i think we are all just meant to follow our heart. thats kind of a vague answer, but when you feel it tugging... you've got to go.

Besides the obvious being a wife and mother, which are my first priorities, I know I'm supposed to be in the health and fitness industry and help people get healthier. We desperately need it in this country. I knew it my sophomore year of college. I just feel way too passionate about it not to do it.

I have no idea what I'm meant to do. None at all!

I know that I am meant to work one on one with individuals. I hope to be an academic advisor when I finish grad school. For now, I am a Hall Director and I work with individual and small groups of college students daily. I feel that my calling is to help individuals reach their personal success.

While that sounds specific, I am always curious about what I "want to be when I grow up".

Great post!!!

Wow, that's really great your friend got that far and can still be positive about the experience. Hmm, your question is a large one. I do know that now that I have kids I feel a huge responsibility to bring them up to be stand up citizens in this world and to make a positive difference. Helping shape the new generation.

Congrats to your friend! That is incredible he made it so far! I still am not 100% sure what I'm going to do with my life and I'm 24---I think it's normal, or at least that's what I tell myself. All that matters to me is that I'm happy in the hear and now...hopefully I'm headed in the right direction! xoxoxo katie

I'm not sure what I'm meant to do, but I think the most important part is enjoying the journey to getting to do what you're meant to do. Your friend has precisely the right attitude. The world conspires to help you and put you where you need to be, when you need to be there. Trusting that may be hard, reminding yourself to take every opportunity that comes your way is important, but it works out. So I'm in school for Philosophy and Science Studies, and I'm really happy about where I am right now.

I just found your blog, and perfect timing because I have been mulling this question over in my mind all weekend. I've been taking some steps in a new direction in an effort to do what I love, and it's been very interesting. Can we be meant to do everything? Ha! Also, I LOVE Pilobolus!!!

Honestly, I have no idea... Stop, that's not correct. I feel I'm meant to be creative - in some way. That's all I care for. (btw, I love the 3 dancers in the picture - so much poise and balance! Also, well done to your friend. I'm sure his time will come!)

I loved what one of the girls said, "don't end up!" LOVE THAT! I believe I am supposed to grow in as many ways as possible and be engrossed in my present role. I think I was meant to embrace life; this can be quite challenging but boy is it rewarding:)

gleenn said...

I'm figuring that actually. Because I feel like I dont' wanna be a teacher for the rest of my life. Good question.

btw, my brother is a dancer and when he auditioned for the university dance troupe, there were thousands who signed up. At end, several equally skilled dancers were left. He said, that when i came to deciding whom to take from all good dancers, the looks and height mattered. he got all, so he wonn a place in the dance troupe. :)

I wish I had the answer to that question, but I'll know through my journey what that is. I do know it involves helping people, nothing makes me happier than putting a smile on someone's face.

Wow, he is rightly so proud of his efforts..Pilobolus are amazing! My Mum was actually the one who introduced them to me...as far as what I'm meant to do with the rest of my life, I'm still uncertain at this young age. But I'm in Event management currently and loving it

I just love to write and I do what I can to constantly fulfill that dream. Writing is just about the only thing that comes naturally to me and challenges me to think differently each and every day.
Wonderful post :)
