Calligraphy

At the school I went to part of the curriculum was learning how to write Calligraphy.  We had our own special fountain pen, blotting paper, and cartridges.  In our sailor uniforms we sat upright at our desks, feet flat on the ground, and held our beautiful pens just the right way.

Our teacher, Mrs. Newman, would walk around and tell us (in her very thick English accent) what letters to write.  She commented that I had very nice "o's."  To this day I still enjoy writing my "o's."

Calligraphy is an art and I love seeing it on wedding announcements, invitations, and anything else that calls for special paper.  It's a nice touch to just about anything (even apples!)  Knowing that this was how princesses and princes wrote to their loved ones makes me feel so special when I write in this ancient style.

Where did you go to school?? It's wonderful they taught you calligraphy -- it's such a beautiful talent to have, and one that's being slowly lost.

I agree, calligraphy is beautiful! Unfortunately, my school didn't offer courses in it. I should have gone to your school! I think I would've enjoyed wearing the little sailor uniforms too -- do you have a picture of you that you wish to share? :)

This brings back so many memories - when I was a child I was obsessed with learning how to write in calligraphy. I even had books about it. Needless to say, I never learned!! :P

fun idea! I taught myself calligraphy and practiced my own unique penmanship, it is a huge joy of mine. I addressed all my wedding invitation envelopes. I'm thrilled you love it too!

My mom bought us a book on it and all these special pens when I was little. Still, I was never very good.

I have some wonderful calligraphy pens and little jars filled with ink... but I've never developed the artistic ability to write beautifully with them. Still some of my most treasured items ever.

Just love beautiful handwriting, sadly mine seems to have gotten quite sloppy with all of my typing these days.

You should include a sample of your calligraphy! - I'd love to see these beautiful 'o's :)

isn't it funny how a teacher's remark can stay with you for so long? i went to Catholic school, so handwriting was pretty big in my early years. i have pretty nice handwriting compared with most people i know because of it!

I think it's really amazing that you had a calligraphy class! So fun. That's something I'd eventually like to really learn how to do. I love how your teachers comment has stuck with you :)

I took a calligraphy course when I was younger too! It was held at our YMCA and I don't even know how or why I was signed up but I loved it! I think I may have even taken the course more than once. I still have my pens and nibs in a "memory box." And I remember feeling like it was so special and a special skill. I had almost forgotten - thanks for the reminder. :)
