Friday's Dancing Blogger and a Few Flexibility Tips

This is dancer Alexa from Ballet Fillet.  Impressive, yeah?

For those wanting more flexibility in the back, it's not as hard as you think.  Although you may not be able to jump like Alexa, gaining a more flexible and stronger back is key to good posture and good health.

Some Tips:

~Try the famous cobra yoga position.  Go as far as you can and hold for thirty seconds. Try going a little farther each time.

~Lay on your stomach and lift up your chest and arms and hold it for a minute.  When you feel your chest lowering fight to go a little higher.

~ Traditional back bends and the camel pose not only help with back flexibility but also balance.

~Stretch your back out the other way in child's pose.  This is important as to not stress out the back too much.  A forward bend is also recommended.

Remember, for each stretch go only as far as it is comfortable.  Also, I am not a yoga expert or a doctor so all my recommendations are purely things that have helped me gain more flexibility.  Tried and tested by yours truly.

And if you would like to send in a jumping, dancing, twirling photo just email me at tiffkaddy at hotmail.com.  It can be a professional one like Alexa or a "I just wanna have fun" shot of you on the beach.  We are all dancers!

Such a great reminder, Tiffany. I always loved the camel pose and in my yoga teaching days I used to be able to touch my feet bending backwards, but that's looong gone. Working on the computer and sadly also tennis both make me bend forwards a lot.

Another good excercise is standing with your back about 30cm from a wall and bending backwards until your hands touch the wall. Try going further and further down, until you can 'climb' down the whole wall (bridge position) and up again (stomach muscles!) xoxo

P.S. The more you move down along the wall the more space you have to leave between yourself and the wall, naturally. ;-)

I so wish I could do that! And Tiffany, thank you so much for the tips! I've always had trouble improving my flexibility. What I really need to do is take some ballet or yoga classes, but in the meantime, I'll start with these moves.

Have a fantastic weekend, my dear!

This is cool! When I did ballet, I was less flexible than a lot of my siblings. I should have worked harder at it.

And I love your tips for flexibility! This is so helpful.
I always think of my legs when I think of flexibility, do you have any tips for getting more-flexible legs, as well?

Hi Tiffany, I'm new to these parts, but loving your posts! Esp. the way you talk about body image issues - I'm not a dancer, but was friends & roommates w/one for 3 years - it's such a big issue for females (esp. young ones) & it's great to see how you're addressing it head-on! (Oh gosh, long comment, sorry :)

great tip! I have a bad back (the dreaded sculiosis) which is the main reason I do ballet. However, I've always had trouble finding stretches that did much.

Thanks for your tips, they are vrey helpful. I would say my back is weak compared to the rest of my body, so my posture is not always the best. These will help!
