Throwing Away the Past

I don't know about you, but I have a plethora of cassette tapes stored away in Xerox paper boxes.  What should I do with them?  I don't foresee myself listening to them in the near future but throwing them out would be throwing away Color Me Badd and En Vogue (eeek!).  Although there is iTunes for some reason getting rid of the physical tape seems sacrilege.

What did you do with all your tapes?  And who even owns a cassette player anymore?

Color me malo?! That is awesome. I happen to think En Vogue would still be good today–I liked them. What happened to them? I think my parents threw my tapes out a long time ago now that I think about it. Haven't seen any for a while!

how funny is it that things we knew and loved as kids... are kids will not even know they existed!

Throwing away Color Me Badd and En Vogue seems like it should be a cardinal sin, right? haha. Sadly, I've moved so much over the past ten years, I think all my cassette tapes are long gone. Fortunately, I have an old school playlist on my itunes that serenades me with all the tunes that bring me right back to my childhood. :)

Um I threw them out about ten years ago and have never looked back-

Really you can get anything you want for free on Pandora-

Throw them out- you can't invite new into your life w/o getting rid of the old.

Have a great weekend!

Ikept the ones I really, really like, but threw whole drawer-fulls away when I moved house three times in one year. I found that I couldn't keep all this stuff and never use it - just a waste of space and resources. These days you can find whatever you want if you look for it, so it doesn't seem such a waste...

I don't really have a problem throwing stuff away at all, I say out with the old! Enjoy your weekend! XO!

I'm so happy to have my ipod and cds because tapes can be such a pain, especially when the tapes get all twisted up. Of course, my brother will be obnoxious and advocate for the return of tapes, but ehh. They're sometimes quite troublesome.

for me, tapes are part of my past... and they would probably stay like that forever ever since i met ipods. LOL. but if you like listening to tapes, why throw them away? ☺

Tapes? Garbage! I have about three cassettes that I've kept, the ones sent to me while I was on my mission...when people still used cassettes! But in general, why hang on to things that you won't use?

Great question. I have a bunch, too, as well as LPs. I have a plan (years in the making) to make a concise list of the artists and my favorite songs, then ditch 'em. I'd like to find all of my old fave songs on MP3.

PS: I love your pic on the cover of Glamour. You are a doll! ;)

LOL LOL!! I am a bad person to ask this....I hold on to far to much. BUT with that said I hate clutter too...so it depends...I'd say chuck it, if you will really never use it again...BUT then again, never say never ;) ....see...I told you I couldn't answer this! Hope you are having a nice weekend Tiffany!

I have a cassette player built into my cd player so I still listen to some of my old mix tapes if I get bored lol

There are just some tapes I would NEVER part with. Color Me Badd would absolutely fall under that category! I've still got Michael Jackson's Bad album and Madonna's Immaculate album on tape. I chucked out my tape player years ago but the tapes are going nowhere! x

Such a great question! Wish I had the answer...tape them all up in a box and put it in the basement? attic? :)

Let me start by saying, I'm an anti-hoarder. Except that I have all my old cassette tapes & VHS video tapes! I NEED to throw them out. But, it's tough - even though I don't have anything that will PLAY them. Ridiculous, right?

I say keep them for the memories! Even though I love my iPod and buying songs from iTunes, there's something so exciting about holding a vinyl record or a tape! It feels more nostalgic and reminds me of being younger. I remember playing Spice Girls full blast on my cassette player, it's a shame i dont have one anymore! I even recorded my own radio station on tape as a child hahaa, fun times! I think looking at the artwork from the music makes it so much more interesting, too :)

Hahhahaa ;) I still own a cassette player and I have a ton of tapes, most of which are stored in this old wine box my dad has had lying around our house for years.

I'm just a same - stored away in boxes in the attic. But the reappearance of the vinyl record has taught: Never give up on an old technic. Also they are memories, just like diaries... So no, I cannot throw them away, yet. xoxo

You should get a tape player and rock out to your old tapes on bad days. Then they will brighten your mood =)

No Tiffany don't get rid of them! Maybe it's because I'm obsessed with mix tapes; but I can't let you part with your cassettes! Ohmigosh they are going to be just as classic as records are someday. Keep them - at least if you have the room.

I don't actually own any cassette tapes; yet I have a few cassette player Walkman's lying around the house from grade school - weird. :/

I still have a cassette player! I still have the same boombox I've been using since the 4th grade (though iTunes gets more use nowadays, I love the nostalgia factor).

I am keeping them all in my storage nicely packaged in boxes...I think I would not have the heart to get rid of them:)

I don't think I could bear to throw away any tapes. Even if I don't listen to them, I imagine my future kid will be fascinated with our outdated technology!

Some people actually recycle them. On Etsy last week someone took took old Ink Cartidges, strung them together and made a chandlier of all things.

Seriously, I've seen some interesting art work made from CD cases so why not recycles cassette tape boxes?

drollgirl said...

bah! you still have those?!?!?

i still have my cds. for sure. but no more vhs or cassette tapes. where did they go? i remember selling some. i think. kind of weird. but maybe hang on to them and you will have cool vintage items for your kids and grandkids to ponder over!
