Mao's Last Dancer

image from the movie's Facebook page

I just heard about this movie (on Regis and Kelly hee hee) and I couldn't wait to share it with you all.  It's a true story based on the autobiographical book of ballet dancer Li Cunxin, played by Birmingham Ballet dancer Chi Cao.

From the movie's website:
The story begins when a young Li is taken from his peasant home by the Chinese government and chosen to study ballet in Beijing.  Separated from his family and enduring countless hours of practice, Li struggles to find his place in the new life he has been given.  Gaining confidence from a kind teacher's encouraging guidance and a chance trip to America, Li finally discovers that his passion has always been dance.

And as a bonus (for all you dance movie junkies) it stars the same person who played Jodie in Center Stage (Amanda Schull).  There is some amazing dancing in this film and looking at the movie clips also some wonderful actors.  And even though the context is pretty heavy I hear it's got a good amount of humor in it.

What's the last movie you saw?
(I saw Toy Story 3 this weekend.  Amazing!)
(And I had S'mores with Nutella.  Yes!)

Can't get enough of dance movies, so this is definitely on my list.
Honestly, it's been ages since I've been to 'the movies'. Big screen at home and BT subscription service let's me watch them at home (which I will probably do with 'Mao's Last Dancer', too).
Wishing you a wonderful Monday, Tiffany!

The movie is very good, but the book is much more inspiring. I have met Li during the promotion of this movie and he is so lovely in real life! Its amazing how much his life has changed.

I saw that the Sundance Kabuki theatre is playing it...it looks beautiful.
I just saw a trailer for "Black Swan" and want to watch it (though it looks like a re-made, modern 'The Red Shoes')

I absolutely LOVE Center Stage! How neat for the same actress/dancer to star in this film. Have you seen the trailer for Black Swan? I'm new to your blog so you may have posted about it already, but it is frightening and intriguing all at the same time!

I got to see an advanced screening of Mao's Last Dancer here in Houston, where the story is set. It is a wonderful film that stands up on its own as something that anyone would enjoy (men, women, non-dancers alike). The dance sequences are beautifully performed and very well acted. Bruce Greenwood (Capt. Pike in Star Trek) is great as HB's former director Ben Stevenson. If you can find somewhere that it is playing nearby go!
