Pain in the Neck

Do you suffer from headache's, shoulder pain, or upper back tightness?  Do you sit at a computer for the majority of the day, drive a lot, or have an ample chest size?  Do you slouch just ever so slightly?  If so you may suffer from "pectoralis minor syndrome," a condition that not only is painful but often chronic.

What happens in pectoralis minor syndrome is the chest area gets tight and causes a "pulling down and forward" on the upper back muscles. This in turn causes tightness and pain everywhere from the head all the way down to the thoracic spine, particularly through the shoulder blades.

Luckily, there is an easy way to remedy pectoralis minor syndrome and that is through proper stretches like this one.

I am not a physician but through my own personal experiences this stretch almost immediately alleviates the headaches and upper back pain I experience when I am particularly stressed or active.  To get a deeper stretch, raise your hands higher on the door frame.  The trick is to let gravity pull you forward until you feel a good stretch in your chest muscles.

If you have any aches or pains that you need help with, just contact me at tiffkaddy at hotmail.com or leave a comment and I can give you tips or my own personal advice on how to feel better.  I'm not a doctor but my advice is totally free.

Also, there is a lot of heartache in the blogging world recently.  My heart is heavy and my thoughts are with you.  I give you all my love.

I absolutely do suffer from a lot of tightness in my upper back -- the results of sitting hunched over a computer a good portion of the day. I am definitely trying these stretches and will do them on a regular basis. Thanks, Tiff!

Thanks for the tip! Headaches and back pain are my constant companions. I get a lot of migraines and I've had back issues since I got in an accident. This seems like it may help when my back gets extra stiff during the day.

holy moly, i was just feeling the worst pinch in my right upper back/shoulder as i opened up this post! i have this pain all the time at work -- i call it mouse shoulder. it HURTS! i will try this stretch immediately!

to be an old complaining lady, somtimes i have the worst hip pain. i think it is from sitting too much. i stretch and contort myself into mad positions trying to stretch out those hip flexors. flexers? sometimes the stretches help. sometimes.

and very sorry about all of the heartache going around on planet earth. life can be so hard. it is such a relief when it gets easier.

I definitely suffer from this... I use this stretch from time to time in an attempt to curb the pain. However, by the time I have pain in my neck or shoulders it's too late for just stretching. I usually have to cut my computer and sitting time in half or more.

I'm also looking into rolfing and somatics... Maybe once I have a job I can afford the rolfing sessions.

Wow, thank you for the advise. I always forget to stretch whilst at the computer. But my workplace had an ergonomics person come in and she gave us the same advise :)

Thank you T!
My neck hurts sometimes...I might have to consider different options for my bed pillows perhaps? Although I can't part with them...

oh yes, this is so me - although sadly not the ample chest!! :)

my bowen therapist gave me that exercise to do, and it is great, helps a lot. But then the sciatica in the lower back kicks in and i'm off in another direction of pain!

coll, thoughtful, post! thanks, jules

OH yes, I suffer from upper back/neck/shoulder pain. I do lots of yoga to try and help and to feel good in general but have found that the stretch you pictured does help a lot. I think the way I sleep has a lot to do with my pain as well but I am having a hard time fixing that problem! :)
