Sick and Need Your Advice

Thank you for all your well wishes on my performances.  Closing night was this last weekend and the show went so well I am still on cloud nine and I can't wait for the next run of shows.  Performing in San Francisco is so exciting and the audiences were amazing.

But on Friday I got sick with a cold that literally knocked me out (I hope the audience did not notice my labored breathing ha!).  I was so upset because I've been sick four times this year (three flus and this dang cold) and although I take vitamin C daily I am around so many kids everyday I know I am bound to get sick more often than I'd like.

So, in lieu of our wonderful upcoming sick season I thought I'd ask you:

What's your advice to ward off sickness?

I know the feeling...I used to work with kids and I got sick every month...A few years ago a friend gave me an advice and I started to do exactly what she has....and it works!
I am eating a half of yellow grapefruit and drink green tea with ginger each day...Both are very good for your immune system:)...I am so sorry you are not feeling well...Rest a lot, darling:)

You should check your vitamin levels. Vitamins A, C, D and E are very important for the immune system.

One kiwi daily has more vitamin C than citrus fruits and that's including the grapefruit, too. Ginger is very hard on the tummy so use with caution. Rest, love, water, fruits, sunlight and a walk in nature amongst the tall trees.
Get well soon;-)

As already mentioned: Warm ginger tea...and I jave to say I never had tummy problems after it...I even also use it when I have tummy problems and it always helps...GET WELL SOON!!

Oh no, I used to get sick more than I liked too (also taught a lot, though they weren't little kids :)) - I found that taking a daily vitamin helped and I've rarely gotten sick in the years since! (I agree w/above poster on vitamin levels being important). Nothing fancy...just something to get your 100% (not above) of the essentials...I wish I could get all my vitamins via diet, not a pill, but that is just not possible with my working lifestyle!

You poor thing! You've been sick way too many times. When I feel like I'm getting sick, I try to get extra sleep, drink lots of tea, and fill my body with good vitamins like vitamin C. And the moment I think I might have a sore throat I gargle with hydrogen peroxide (just don't swallow it); the moment I think it might be a cold, I use a neti pot to clear my nose. It helps. Rest up my dear and feel better!

So sorry your not feeling well! I'm so glad you had a blast during your performances though. I've never wanted to be in San Francisco more! I was sick more during my first year of stupid preschool than I felt I had ever been in my whole life! At times you just feel sick of being sick. On a regular basis, get as much sleep as you possibly can, and wash your hands like a crazy person! I hope you feel better soon! Sending lots of tissue and chamomile tea thoughts you way.

Oil of oreganol. It's anti-everything. And amazingly immune building. I take it in a gel cap but if you are feeling like you are getting sick, there is NOTHING better than the drops. I take it in juice and call it my "glass of pizza." If I am feeling something really stubborn, I use it AND goldenseal. I RARELY get sick and when I do, maybe for a day or two.

Oh, there are so many things to boost your immune system... above mentioned oregano oil is a super antioxidant, but so is hibiscus, echinacea, zinc, olive leaf extract, beta-glucans (can you tell I'm working in this area ;-)
I normally go for a good antioxidant mix, but then I probably swallow more supplements than real food... Hope you get better soon, Tiffany, and CONGRATULATIONS to your successful performance (and btw, after a very stressful period it's totally normal for the immune system to collapse.)

Getting enough rest. I always find that I am far more susceptible to sickness when I'm lacking in the sleep department. :/

I think rest and exercise are good ways to keep yourself strong.

Feel better soon!

Stay away from evil kid germs. Avoid all hand touching and sneezes. Just saw a study on how far a sneeze can "spread" germs. Kind've gross!!! Best to sneeze into your elbow. Way gross, but doesn't contaminate as much.

So glad you performances went well. Last year I had so many colds. Upping your Vit. C intake is important but also stress causes a lot of it so make sure you're getting all your B's as well. I also swear by Zicam at first sign of cold. Also just stay away from foods that cause congestion when you are beginning to feel sick (dairy, sugar, etc).

Oh no! I'm not really one to talk (in the past year, I've been sick four or five times...in the span of two months, I got swine flu, pneumonia, AND strep throat)...but ahem, here goes my advice: drink lots of water, sleep plenty, exercise. But I guess that's the normal prescription for just generally living a healthy life.
Feel better soon!!!

Oh no...hope you feel better! I just got over a cold and hope it's the last one of the season =) Here's my regime in hopes I don't get sick again: Emergen C packets after I exercise to replenish electrolytes, Greens to Go packets for a boost of veggies, lots of water, lots of sleep nightly, exercise, and I think that's it. Let's hope this works! Oh and lots of garlic.

I don't usually get sick more than once or twice a year, what I usually do is to wash my hands often and not touch my face (nose mouth). However I am not around kids often so maybe some hand sanitizer too? Hope you feel better soon!

Aww, Tiffany! I am so sad to have missed your performance when you were here! I have been swamped and entertaining guests. Phew. But I would love to connect with you soon! Sorry to hear you are sick! My advice - Zicam. Suck on those tablets - lemon lime is the best, in my opinion. Otherwise, vitamins C and D, and zinc. Lots of water and tea.

Oh no!! But I've got the trick for you... Ester C! My aunt is a nurse and the staff at the hospital take this stuff so they don't get sick from patients. So of course, I started taking it too. Check it out... Ester C!! Oh, and you can find it at all drug stores by the vitamins. Get better sweetie!

okay one of my volunteers JUST told me this.. literally 5 minutes ago -- Juice! but not just any juice, like whole foods kind of juice. don't eat anything with it. she said the trick is to wait at least 30 minutes before eating else to let all the nutrients seep in. i've never done it, but i just tasted hers. yum & i totally believe it could work!

btw -- i SO wish i could see you perform!

If you are already taking vit c then i'd say the standard rest rest and more rest. For some reason when I don't feel well I think washing my sheets often helps me feel better?

I'm so sorry to hear this, when my husband and I were living in Costa Rica we got sick pretty often because it rains almost every single day! We got used to drinking a lot of tea and orange juice and eating a lot of raw veggies. That did the trick!

Emergen- C! Get it at Walgreens and take it 2-3 times a day when you're feeling weak. Other than that, an apple everyday and lots of grapes and pineapple.

Grapefruit juice is one of my favorite ways to stay healthy, but I'm prone to getting sick just after a big performance. It's the combination of nerves and excitement, and after such a big high, it's easy not to take very good care of yourself!

Fell better!

Rest, rest, rest. Emergen-C and Zicam. Mint and sleepy-time tea. And a snuggly cat. Feel better!

we take cod liver oil everyday. i know, we're insane. luckily it doesn't taste like cod liver oil. our dr. says a vitamin d deficiency may be a reason for frequent sickness rather than vitamin c (especially in the winter). so we take vitamin d and get lots of sunshine. :) and of course we eat lots of fruit, veggies and nuts!

Kristin said...

Zicam always shortens my colds! The kind that you stick up your nose. It's kinda gross, but I tend to have like 10 day long colds and when I take Zicam they're usually like 5 days!

Eme said...

Hi!
You should be careful about taking vitamins EVERY day!! You should take vitamins, once a year, a couple of months before winter. I usually take cod fish liver oil. It doesn't sound very good, but you don't even taste it. It has a lot of vitamins, and I rarely get a cold. Hope you get better soon!

Rock'n Roll Ballerina said...

Oh I hope you get better soon! Continue to take your vitamins c's and rest rest and rest some more, I think that's the only way of getting through this. Oh yes, if you have a sore throat then take a glas of luke warm water, mix plenty of salt into it and gurlge as much as you can. But try not to swallow the salt water. This is supposed to make your throat less sore, and the salt will kill some germs as well. Fell better soon! :)

I wish I had some sickness advise, but I don't :( Though I noticed that I tend to get sick only if I'm 'weak'...not enough sleep due to finals or something like that.

Sorry you haven't been feeling well. There was one year I got sick a lot because my immune system was shot from stress and overworking. I think regular sleep and exercise (the latter is probably not really a problem of yours). Vitamin C generally is my best way to ward of a cold as well (I drink a lot of grapefruit juice).

Barbara said...

that's terrible :(
i guess i never get sick because i eat a lot of fruit, if that makes sense???

Collins said...

I wish I had some good advice for you but I haven't quite figured it out myself. Though I don't seem to get sick much these days. Make sure to get enough sleep, that always helps. When I am stressed I get sick. If you find an instant cure for stress PLEASE let me know! :)
Hope you feel better soon!

I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well :( I always make a quick run to the coffee shop on my way to work to grab a much needed green tea, some fruits and a packet of nuts and berries. It's helped a lot with keeping the cold and sniffles away, and saying hello to the regulars each morning makes for a good way to start the day.

I hope you feel better soon!

I take a combo of herbal remedies, and stay in bed as much as possible.
