Wow, how terrible! I've heard of people using social media, like twitter and facebook, to watch for when people won't be home. I think as bloggers we are vulnerable because we walk a line with sharing our lives.
It is so funny that you put Portland as the trip that you want. I may have stolen away to Spokane for a night, but I really, really want to go to Portland! I've never been there! Now that I live in the NW it is about time! Going away for a night just gave me the bug for wanting to take a trip :)
Poor thing - there really are such terrible people in this world! Off to visit now!
