For all those saw my Tweet last night or who saw Google today, Ryan Woodward created this live animation doodle that celebrated the birthday of Martha Graham, one of the pioneers of modern dance. Oddly enough, I was planning on blogging about Martha Graham yesterday, unaware that it was her birthday and before I saw the doodle, but erased the post at the last minute. I think Martha was calling to me and I ignored her!

I will be studying her technique while at the Laban University in London this summer. I have a feeling it is going to kick my booty. But I chose her because I wanted needed a challenge.

An except of prose by Martha Graham from the Martha Graham Dance Company website:
I am a dancer. I believe that we learn by practice. Whether it means to learn to dance by practicing dancing or to learn to live by practicing living, the principles are the same. In each it is the performance of a dedicated precise set of acts, physical or intellectual, from which comes shape of achievement, a sense of one’s being, a satisfaction of spirit. One becomes in some area an athlete of God.
I cannot wait to walk in her footsteps this summer.
(Side note: My mom emailed me yesterday and said "Go to Google.com. There's a dance routine on there." I don't know why but that made me laugh.)

I experience Martha Graham style of dance for the first time when I was in New York City years ago. I have to admit, I was completely blown away. I can't wait to hear about all the things you learn this summer, Tiffany! (Make sure someone gets some photos of you.)
I adored that Google design when I first spotted it; I love the fact that there is meaning, and the celebration of a true artist behind it. :)

I used to dance modern ballet when I was younger and Martha Graham was always the idol. I remember her dance troup in Oslo and Martha was still alive and came on the stage at the end of the performance.
A wonderful time in my life!

Oh Martha Graham... that technique was SO hard for me and felt SO unnatural in my body, but ironically it also made me hella strong and improved my technique significantly. Good luch with it in London town!
