Balance

Sometimes when I think of balance I assume it means trying to delicately and almost tediously handle multiple things at once. But the truth is balance is not trying to carry as much as you can without falling over it's carrying anything with a solid foundation.

One of the basic principles I teach my students is to have a solid foundation when they stand. I teach this so that when they start to jump, turn and be all kinds of fabulous on stage their bodies will have a solid foundation wherever they go and whatever they do.

It's that solid foundation that takes all of us out of the world of uncertainty and into the world of success, whatever success means to you. Yes, a solid foundation means you will be able to handle multiple things at once (like a triple pirouette into the splits) but it also means you can stand beautifully and gracefully on your own.

What does having a solid foundation mean to you?

For me, having solid foundation is having a good night's sleep, and meals at the appropriate times - basically fulfilling basic needs before trying to tackle everything at once! Definitely helps!

In my world, having a solid foundation means having the strength to face adversity, and stand up for what you believe in. To be proud of your opinions and thoughts, and not conceal them to please others. :)

This post is great. To me, a sold foundation means an unwavering sense of who you are what life means to you. I think with a good definition of those two things, you can withstand anything.

For me, having a solid foundation means knowing myself and staying true to myself. As long as I can do that I can get through anything.

Ooh, so difficult. At first I would say my family, the people I love... but I guess a solid foundation needs to be found in oneself - I think I trust in my ability to change according to my needs.

This is absolutely wonderful. My strong foundation are my beliefs and values, and the people I can always come to at the end of a tough day and talk to.

to me it means having the solid ground to explore fears and unwanted feelings, challenge thoughts and beliefs, and open yourself up to new possibilities.

discovering who we are and what we're capable of happens at all sorts of points throughout our lifespan, and for many people, this is a scary process. having a solid foundation {which i identify as having a great support group, higher education, developed hobbies/skills, good health, and a form of spirituality, just to name a few} will help people feel a little more sure of themselves, a little more courageous, to take those risks required to grow.

i think of my family. and more specifically my momma dearest. she is the strongest foundation anyone could ask for. I also think of myself to be perfectly honest. I feel really good about where I am in the "big picture" and i think that def filters down into those smaller, tricker pictures you have in life. I also think of my cat, as I am always amazed at how she can walk a think line and never make a sound!

my solid foundation is found in my relationship with Christ, in my faith in Him. He is the most solid thing in my life - he is what I cling to when everything around me is so shaky.

balance is so tricky. thank you for a thought-proving post, love!

hmmm. i am thinking about this. a solid foundation would things that you can count on -- constants -- things that you can count on in life to get you by during the tough times. but maybe i am talking about emotional and spiritual stuff, and not physical stuff. and maybe i am not thinking clearly!

Hello! I just ran into your blog today and I absolutely love it! I'm also a dancer and I went to Chico State, which is close to you.

I've been out of touch with dance lately and I recently decided to jump back into it. I've never felt better!

So for me, a solid foundation means staying true to your passions.

Beautiful! I would say a solid foundation means having strong, solid relationships with your loved ones. I know that is the case for me. No matter what hardships come my way I'm able to stay strong knowing that I have that. I also think that it's an inner strength. You have to believe in yourself, your abilities and your values.

To me it means not forgetting who you are!

Such a great thought provoking post!! A solid foundation to me is definitely the one I have with my family, friends and the relationship with my daughter. To keep my core values in place no matter the situation on any given day and to remember those strong words of advice that were taught to me from my Mom growing up, to always be yourself and follow your heart no matter.

xo

Wonderful post and comments!...to follow. Balance...keeping faith in the face of a world going crazy, that my relationships and values are never less meaningful than they were before "x" happened and distracted me/us temporarily...and being able to withdraw from the outer to a calm inner appreciation of the goodness that is always there for us, and is unwaveringly there.

Lovely photo -- I have to subscribe to your blog for these.

A solid foundation. Hmm. I've been searching for one. At the age of 42 I've hit a crossroads in my life and I'm floundering. But at least I'm making an effort to travel that road!
