If you grew up in the United States and you are between the ages of 10 and 40 then you know all about American Girl Dolls. These dolls represented all the girls in the United States from prairie girl Kirsten to way posh Victorian era Samantha.
Not surprising my doll was Samantha.
She had velvet coats with black fur trim.
She had fur hand muffs and shiny shoes with nice white tights.
She had dark curly hair perfectly coiffed and tied in a ribbon that matched
each of her perfectly tailored dresses.
She even had her own valise lined with fancy fabric.
Let's not forget about her embroidered handkerchief, and a brooch.
A brooch!
Also not surprising is the fact that I still love all those things: fancy coats, elaborate (yet functional) accessories, trimmed hats, and shoes made for rainy weather in upscale New England.
Think plaid, fur, and gilded anything and you have Samantha.
So, in honor of Samantha I've created this post of all the things
I think Samantha would wear if she were my age (or real).
I think Samantha would wear if she were my age (or real).
green dress, plaid dress, lace dress
heels, cream boots, black boots
red coat, plaid coat, camel coat
Samantha's accessories.
Please excuse the lack of cohesion in this collage.
I just kind of went crazy with the accessories and picked out things I knew she would wear without a plan of attack. Hey, that's like when I wear my own accessories!
As I wrap up this post I realize that Samantha went through a nautical phase with cute sailor dresses and blue and white accessories. Darn, I guess I'll just have to blog about her again.
Did you have an American Girls Doll?
What one did you have?
(My sister had Kirsten, the prairie girl. Why would anyone want to be a poor prairie girl when you could be a rich Victorian heiress is beyond me.)

I had 3-- Kristen, Felicity and Samantha! My favorites were Kristen and Felicity!
You see, now I have one more HUGE reason for loving you, Tiffany - American Girl! I had Kirsten; but Samantha was always my favorite! I also loved Kit. I still have all of the books! :)
She sounds perfect - a Victorian princess with her own brooch! I want all the accessories that you posted!

I had (actually, still have, in a keepsake box) Felicity. I wanted Kirsten but changed my mind at the last minute...and Felicity was perfect. My mom even sewed me a dress to match one of her outfits once. I wore it constantly (and I wore the top to school as a sweater once, actually). I also went a little bit crazy when we visited Williamsburg when I was ten. Perhaps that's why I'm so interested in that period of history.
One of the girls I sometimes babysit for still gets the catalogues. They're all about the "looks like me" dolls now, not so much the historical collection. It makes me a little sad.
I kind of just missed out on American Girls. They just didn't interest me. BUT I love this fashion!
Oh I loved Samantha. I had one of the dolls that looked like me when they first came out... but I was a Molly girl. (Actually my doll basically just looked like Molly anyway). I still have her at my parents and when I go home I try to change up her outfit... for old time's sake.

I love love love this post! It made me laugh and then remember how much I loved my doll, Kirsten. :) BTW-I can totally see Samantha wearing all these digs!
I actually never did! I think I'm too old to tell you the truth. LOL
I do, however, have experience with the brand because I worked on a co-branded American Girl bath and body line for Bath & Body Works :)
Have a great weekend, sweetie! xoxo
I think they no longer sell the Samantha American girl Doll. Or they now have all the dolls on some rotation, so only some of them are available at any given time...
My doll was Samantha, but I also had an Asian 'American Girl of Today' doll. They're still somewhere in my parents' house!
I didn't :(
but I very much agree - nothing beats a well dressed doll. I loved making clothes for my barbies (and cutting their hair)...
I never got into the American Girl dolls as a kid (my mother probably hid their existence from me, knowing I'd be admiring them for life!), but I could really fall head over heels for their attire now :)
Yes I did have an American girl doll. I also had Samantha... and it may have played a part in my daughter Samantha's name hehe.

such a fun post! i had 2 american girl dolls - but sam was always my girl!
I had all the books, but no doll (Kirsten was my favorite). My sister had no books, and got the Felicity doll customized to look like her. We're in our mid20s and it still stings a little, ha.
Oh my. I love, love, love the dress on the top right. It's gorgeous in its simplicity.
I live in Canada. We don't have American Girls dolls. But I've read about them online. I'd have loved something like that as a kid. Dolls were my favourite.
Omg! yes! YES YES and more YES! did you know right at this very moment I am deciding what to sell, give away and what to take to NYC in two weeks and I cam eacross my Samantha doll!!! Still has hat and all the little little gadets! Guess what pile she is in? the KEEP! lol
I was a Samantha then and a Samantha today-I just love this! And I can't wait for the nautical phase either-didn't that correspond with her adorable Valentine campaign?
never had one of those... but i know my niece is saving her money to buy one... have a great weekend my dear!

Love the jackets! I did not have a doll, but my friends did. I was busy playing outside with my brother and his friends being a tomboy lol :-)
oh goodness, how did i just completely miss the boat on that one? i had a cabbage patch kid when i was young. i think my mom bought it from the black market late one night before xmas because they were all sold out. then a few years later she watched as i sold it to someone for $5 in a garage sale. i think she was mortified, but i didn't know about money back then...
but i do love all this fashion!!
I had Samantha! Love the collages! Totally Samantha in the modern day.
my bff always loved those!i can totally see those dresses as inspired by them. i never for some reason got in to them though, but they are really cute :)
What a brilliant idea! I love your coices.
Are you kidding me? That crap was expensive! :-) I did have a catalogue though and I loved leafing through the pages and seeing all of the detailed accessories for each doll though.
I love all those outfits and accessories. To die for!
I remember always wanting one of these dolls when I was little. I used to sit for hours circling everything I wanted from their catalog. :)
i loved these dolls. for a long time i would ask for a new one each christmas. i ended up collecting kirsten, samantha, addie, and josephine. i loved these dolls!
samantha all grown up?! i love this post! :) i never had one of the dolls because they were too expensive, but i did have the books. i read every single one of the samantha ones. i loved that she had dark hair like me and was a little improper, even though she was raised in a high class society.
yes..... samantha! i loved her so much. also, big fan of kirsten. molly & felicity grew on me in my older, more mature years.
