Ballet Class Necessities: Apples, Fruit Roll Ups, and Pretzel Sticks

the result of many apples and pretzel sticks

When I teach ballet I tend to refer to food to help students understand better how to execute certain steps.  This is how a typical Dancing Branflake class goes:

Apples to get your neck longer: "Pretend you have two apples on your shoulders and you don't want them to touch your ears."

Fruit Rolls Ups to keep your stomach in and back pulled up: "Let's take out our fruit roll ups and wrap them around our middles. If you keep your bellies in then we'll eat them after class. nom nom nom"

Pretzel sticks to keep legs straight: "Glue on pretzel sticks to your knees. If you bend them then the pretzels will break and you'll have pretzel crumbs everywhere. And then you can't eat them after class and that is really sad."

Marshmallows on heels to have quiet landings when jumping: "You chose! Pink or white. Now put them on (I pretend to put them on my heels) and don't let me hear you land."

I use a ton of other food analogies but those are my standards for every class. And if I don't use them? There is an uproar of little voices that we forgot to put on our Fruit Roll Ups or pretzel sticks, which I find very endearing.

So today, if you feel like you need to stand up straighter or if you want a nice dancer's neck,
use a little imagery and stick on those apples and Fruit Roll Ups.

YESSSS! I use food imagery like it's going out of style. It's my favorite for sure. I love these ideas! made me smile! :)

So funny!! We do the same in our irish dance classes, however, it's more to teach rhythm.

"Piz-za is my fav-rit-snack" and "peanutbutterjelly is my favorite snack"

Something the kids can relate to, and like repeating over and over to get that rhythm in their heads!

Haha, my master always referred to food, or rather cooking, in class; add some more pepper to those pirouettes, that developpé is in sore need of some butter etc :p
Great post!

haha! that's so great. and do they ever get sad if there aren't actual fruit roll ups and pretzels to eat after class? i love using imagery with everything. i do it all the time in therapy, even with adults, and it's so helpful. i guess i should do it more in my personal life huh? oh if only i could taste my own medicine.

Love the imagery and look at you as a ballerina!

I'm so glad I don't take your class -- I'd be baking after every single one. That would only be a good thing if you came over to eat it all with me. I had a similar problem when I tutored math -- everything became a baking example. I love how creative you are, Tiffany!

I like to use food analogy in my class too. This morning I was teaching about the calculation of area of a normal curve. In certain circumstances the calculation is indirect and we have to divide the normal curve into 2 halves - like cutting a Secret Recipes's cake! (Secret Recipe's is a famous bakery in Malaysia)

Wow, that's a lot of food talk for a Ballet class. But you are a great teacher for sure.

That's my favorite way to describe things. When I'm at work, I relate tasks to food; at home, to food, and if I'm out and about...you guessed it I relate it to food.

love it!

When I'm dancing I never eat, I tend to eat after a class. A banana is best for energy and the bones I find.

You sound like such a great teacher, I wish you'd been my teacher instead of a strict french lady who carried a black stick (that hurt!)

This is funny because when I teach, I use food analogies all the time! Like a fondu-developpé should have the gooey quality of melted cheese that won't break, like when you take a bite of pizza! Sometimes I'll say melted marshmallows too ;-)
