How this shopping freeze helped me lose weight

image from Martha Stewart

I recently stepped on the scale (nope- I cannot give up that habit quite yet
and realized that I have never weighed this little in all my adult life.
I've actually drastically cut down on my exercising and dancing since Europe
so you would think I would have gained weight since the summer.
But I attribute my weight loss to one thing and one thing only.

Eating less.

Since I started this shopping freeze I looked at all the excess in my life and realized I ate a lot of food.
Yes, a big hearty bowl of spaghetti and meatballs is what every girl craves after a long day
but I could instead have celery and hummus and be okay.
I'm little- I won't die of starvation.
Now I only eat when hungry and when I do eat I try to make it super healthy and in small portions.
It's not about deprivation.
When I want something (like a hot fudge sundae with raspberries and chocolate cake) then I'll eat it.
But when I can I will eat as healthy as possible.

So basically, my new motto is "I can eat/buy/consume less and be okay."
(Now don't you all want a big bowl of spaghetti?)

I think many have a tendency to over-indulge in every aspect in life. Sometimes, you just have to stay true to the ideation of less is more. :)

I'll be saying your motto everyday because I need to STOP consuming so much! Food, stuff, whatever... I need to consume less.
Nice post!

Have no job for 6 months helped me lose about 10 pounds. We didn't have money for fast food or snacks so I just stopped eating as much!

yes! a part of my job at the eating disorder clinic is to prep some snacks/meals for the patients and then eat with them {to support them eat and model healthy food behaviors}. i've had to do a lot of training in nutrition and what i learned was this - i had been eating completely unbalanced meals because no one had ever taught me what an appropriate serving size was of all the different food groups. at the clinic, we weigh and measure out everything so the patients are getting Exactly two starches, 4oz of protein, 2 fats, 1 dairy, and 2 veggies. it's amazing what a plate of food looks like after i measure it all out!! but i think this is pretty common, at least in our western world. none of us were taught these things, but if we changed our eating habits to fit this, we would all have a much easier time with weight, energy, and overall health. thanks for blogging about this. it's so important!

That is my problem. I need to learn from you! I'm a dancer who loves to bake WAY too much (I'm actually eating a "brookie" as I type...). Good for you! Now hopefully some one can say that to me soon when I get myself under control!

This is exactly what I'm trying to do. But I'm also still trying to work through my emotional eating as well. That part is a little more complicated, but it gets easier every day and it helps to really ask myself if I'm really hungry every time I want to eat.

I also recently got on a scale - I haven't weight this little since my Freshman year of college. I couldn't figure out what it was at first either (hello, haven't been to the gym in AGES) and then I realized it's because I too have been eating less/am making smarter food decisions. Yay for a healthy lifestyle! :o)
