I was always told there were two rules about wearing black:
1. Don't wear it with blue.
2. Don't wear it with brown.
Oprah's stylist recently announced that it's okay to wear blue shoes with a black dress and now I'm announcing that it's okay to wear brown anything with black everything.
(Because, you know, I have as much pull and influence as Oprah and her team of two thousand.)
I don't know if you remember, but I wore this dress last Thanksgiving when Mr. Branflake and I went on our getaway to Monterey and had a fancy schmancy dinner at a restaurant where I still won't tell him how much it cost (it was a surprise gift from me. Go here and here to read all about it).
This time I added the black tulle slip, the black sash, and the black booties.
I forgot, though, the gold diamond cuff, my wedding ring, and a statement necklace to add a little more zing to the outfit. We were in a hurry and were losing light so I kind of just forgot about accessories all together.
But you get the idea: brown and black is okay. (I hope)

I love brown and black together! Yet whenever I wear them I feel like others might follow the old rules and think I've lost my mind :-)
This is gorgeous! I think black with brown is something to be done intentionally-very brown with obviously black is wonderful, but a mishmash or colors that are too close just don't do it for me.
That dress is absolutely gorgeous and it's a really rich brown so black looks wonderful with it.

i am totally down with brown and black and brown and blue. and blue and black! my friend told me in HS that you could never wear it and it took me a LONG time to get over that...
I love brown and black together when they are done well...like the outfit you are wearing. I have to say I hate brown shoes with a black belt... that is just plain wrong and my husband does it all the time. No matter what I tell him.

Style rules are meant to be broken, provided they are broken stylishly. How you do that, I don't really know (or else I'd probably do it!), but I think you've managed it--your outfit's adorable!
black and brown is totally ok, and sometimes it is downright FAB!

Oh my gosh I love it! I never pay much attention to those rules anyway. I feel like if you wear your clothing with intention and it fits you well, then you can do almost anything.

I'm serious. I want this dress in blue. And I'll pair it with black shoes and break that whole black-navyblue rule. The color combos do work I think, even if we've been taught to believe otherwise.

I don't follow anyone's fashion rules but my own. If I like it, feel good in it then I wear it. If we feel confident in it we can pull just about anything off! xo
I started ignoring all the fashion rules and started mixing things up. Stripes with dots, blue with brown, black and brown - and doing this has really made me feel more confident about myself. :)

Unless it's cognac, I'm still antsy about black&brown. I wear blue and black all the time lol, and brown and blue. But just the two dark neutrals freak me out. You look awesome in that dress, great way to work the two colors together!
My Growing Obsessions
I used to be really anti-black&brown together, but when I was living in Paris in 2008 it was everywhere. 3, almost 4, years later it's just starting to become more normal here. I say, go for it! :)
