What are your Nutcracker memories?

Yesterday Blair from Wild and Precious blogged about how seeing The Nutcracker was a tradition in her family because her sister was always in it.

It got me thinking that maybe we all have our own Nutcracker story.

I've personally cracked a few nuts myself and
I sincerely hope I will never perform in a Nutcracker ever again.
In fact, dancers always joke that when we hear Nutcracker music in the mall we can't help but feel nauseous.

But, to be honest, I have fond memories of seeing the ballet as a little girl and I can't wait to dress up my little girls in their prettiest Christmas dresses and take them to see it also.

Hopefully by then the nausea will have subsided.

So I ask you:
What are your Nutcracker memories?
Were you ever in it?
Did you see it as a young child?
Have you taken your children to see it?
Do you love the fact that the entire ballet is about dessert?

Can you believe I've never seen it? I know. Seems like I've seen everything else. We had really good tickets once when Logan was little but she had pneumonia. xo

I always wanted to dance in it and my mom wouldn't let me.

As a long term dancer myself I love ballets! And I love dessert! The nutcracker...what's not to love, apart from the sugarplum tune playing in my head in loops afterwards.

I was a child at the party in the local ballet's Nutcracker because they always used kids from my studio so I still LOVE it. I have dreams to this day about ballet and pirouetting more times than is humanly possible.

I can see how y'all feel differently about it though :)

would you believe I have never seen it? Bryan was going to take me last weekend, but ended up having to work. I think I'll just wait until Emma is old enough to enjoy it.

my sisters many roles included snow corp, arabian, soldier, candycane, ... maybe some other stuff. my memory gets a little hazy because she was in it in delaware before we moved to knoxville and they had different characters for the dances. the times in knoxville i remember the most - it was at the big theater downtown. the seats were this crunchy blue velvet stuff and i always hated it when i would wear a skirt with tights because it pricked my legs when i sat. :) I was always jealous of my sister- one: because i liked to perform just didn't have the ballet tallent and two: because they got to be backstage and have their own little makeup desk with big bulb lights. everyone would leave eachother presents on their desks. :)

I honestly don't even remember the last time I saw it... maybe junior high?

I just might be the only dancer that has never danced in The Nutcracker. However, it was a holiday tradition for us. My grandparents would get me a new dress and take me every year. I can't wait to do the same thing with my daughter as she grows up.

I never saw the Nutcracker until college, and mine is reknowned for its annual production of the Nutcracker. I've seen it every year since and am not tired of the cute little ballerinas, the sumptuous sets, and the magical, dreamy quality of it all!

I host a little dinner party before the ballet then follow-up afterward with homemade caramel hot chocolate. My goal is to eventually make Bakerella's Nutcracker cakepops for dessert!

Once i suggested we go for a work party. Everyone went out to dinner first and a lot of people drank (I didn't). Because of the alcohol about half of our party fell asleep!!!! It was kind of funny.

I haven't gotten to see it in years, but we used to go every year when I was a little girl. My family had a tape of the score and I used to dance to it for ages (and make my dad play every male part...). I have so many fond memories.

i'm guilty here -- I've never seen it. The music is so beautiful, though! :)

I went and saw it with my mom when I was young and it was magical. She had bought me a special outfit for the occasion and made an event of it. Thanks for reminding me, I love your thoughtful, beautiful blog.

I can't help myself–I think I'll always be a sucker for the Nutcracker, no matter how many times I scrambled out from underneath that skirt! Even after I stopped dancing, my mom was the costume mistress and was always bringing home the Sugar Plum Fairy or the rats' costumes to be fixed–talk about magical!

I used to see the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle at Christmas when I was a kid. The last time I saw it, I was 18. I just moved to Chicago so I'm psyched to see the Joffrey Ballet's version next week. I was never in it but I love all the music and wish I could have danced in it at least once. I've been hyping it up to my girlfriends by telling them the entire story! I cannot wait!!

I always wanted to be in it (my mom was in it several times), but I never pursued it, and my parents never encouraged me to audition. Sad.

I've enjoyed beautiful productions plenty of times... But, I kind of feel like... If I never see the Nutcracker again, it wouldn't be the biggest loss.

I do think that all children should see it. It's so sweet to see them dressed up and giddy beforehand, and trying leaps and spins with starry-eyes afterward.

I love, love, LOVE the Nutcracker!! I love Christmas, and it just isn't Christmas without the Nutcracker... even if I don't get to see it that year. I'm happy with just listening to the music and arranging my nutcracker dolls on the bookshelf. I was never in the ballet, saw it as a kid a few times... I think I don't hate it like other dancers because I wasn't in it as a young girl.

I've seen the Nutcracker more times than I can count, but I always love watching the Russian dancers and Arabian.

This is so horrible to admit but I've never seen it in person! Can you believe? And I live in NYC. It's a real shame. I was supposed to go this year finally but the plans got changed. Definitely will make it happen next year :) xoxo

Aw, I can't help but love it. First saw when I was a kid, danced to the music in various recitals and played the music in various orchestras ( violin). Now I make my husband see the NYCB version every year and I can't wait to take our future kids. :)
