Creating Stories Through Photographs

I believe that good photography catches your eye but great photography creates a story that ignites all your senses.
These photos by Sarah Maingot have transported me into a land where day dreaming is inevitable and the subject is just as interesting as the beginning, middle, and end.

Speaking of photography,
what do you consider to be a great photograph?
Good lighting? Interesting subject? Unique editing skills? Perfect composition?
As someone who regularly posts her own photography on here, I'm quite curious to know.
Mr. Branflake has very discriminating tastes when it comes to photography and it's very interesting to hear him talk about photos on blogs.
Take note: We do not always agree!

I agree, Tiffany - a photograph that can convey more than what's seen in the frame is a powerful one. One that evokes emotion or feeling. It's pretty incredible that we live in a time and day that we can capture these things within the small space of a frame - choosing what goes in it is such a form of art! :)

I love photography! It's maybe my favorite "art" form...there are so many things that that make a great but the ones I'm most drawn to are the ones that evoke an emotion from me...yeah, it's completely subjective, I know.

My goodness, how beautiful! I think a good photograph is one that makes you feel something–whether that's happiness, appreciation of beauty or even revulsion. But I'd much prefer something over nothing!

amazing photographer you find there, lovely.

i particularly like feet one. brilliant.

I like photographs that capture a moment. a moment that will never be again. Henri Cartier-Bresson called it the Decisive Moment.

I think images tend to be over edited these days.
Lighting, lighting, lighting. It can make or break a photo. And composition is also key...it's the art of it all. I almost feel like composition can't be taught...one either sees the beauty and art or they don't. But all the technical stuff can be taught (lighting, etc.)
I definitely love simplicity and classic looks in photos. With children's photos, the outfit can really make or break a picture. Simplicity and layers...classic attire...those make for beautiful photos of children.

These photos are fantastic...I love that there are so many different styles of photography, from the staged still lives to the candid shots of people in all different places. I think a photographer's creativity and eye for aesthetics is what makes a great photograph.

Those photos are so amazingly beautiful. It is difficult to say exactly what makes a photograph great, there is so much that goes into it. I think it's important to capture the honestly of the moment. In a world where everything is edited to a point where it may as well have not been taken by a person with a camera, the photographs I tend to like best are raw, natural, unedited.

A photo should make you dream.

That's what I think, anyway--it should make you dream and want to create. Those are the sorts of images I always return to and love.

how gorgeous... my favourite is the one of the shoes with the pastries. hmmm, interesting question. I think for me a good photo is about the balance between composition, depth of field and use of colour. I like photos that aren't heavily photoshopped and that capture some emotion, or grab your imagination when you look at them. Hope you've had a lovely start to the week!

gorgeous photos.
as far as good photographer - I think that the most important thing is the captured moment AND the subject/object you want to portray. When attention is on what you want to emphasize, the picture tells its own story. I love photography. The moments and memories it captures are treasures for generations.

I love photography that connects to feelings I have. It could be a great landscape and if the coloring and mood is just right, I will love it. Or it could be of anything but if it strikes a chord with me i'm sold. that being said, maybe I would love something one day and not the next? not sure!
have a superb day my dear!!!

I think natural light contributes greatly to make a good photograph. Also intriguing depth of field, usually helps to make interesting images. http://emsdarkroom.blogspot.co.uk/ follow me! Emily

I really love that photograph with the shoes in the pastry case - what an interesting concept.

I think the thing that makes a photograph is...Truth. Something that is able to capture the reality of a subject (be it beautiful or gritty). :)

Beautiful! I especially like the 2nd one - black and white always draws me in (and if it wasn't so difficult to sacrifice colours I would do more b/w photography)...
Your question is soooo difficult. I guess it's transporting something (an emotion, a longing, a perception) that we (the photographers) see and want to communicate. Does that make sense?

great pics... they transport you to another world...
I hope I learn with time to take pictures (I don't dare say like this) but that can take someone else to another world also... that inspires :) I'll keep on trying...

sarah maingot is an excellent photographer. her pictures are ethereal.

in my opinion, a good photograph causes pause; whether that be from emotion or a memory or a thought.

there's wonder in what develops. i think that appreciating that is what makes it good.
