How do you accessorize your Little Black Dress?

I tried this Banana Republic LBD while shopping with my fellow dancing friend.
I squealed- it fit perfectly!

I don't watch Mad Men (I know! Don't judge!),
but I can't help but feel very Christina Hendricks in this dress.
Well, minus the obvious hair, body, and facial differences.

But I need to find a way to accessorize it and I am horrible at accessorizing.
I'm sad to say that it goes back to body image issues.

I don't wear bracelets because I don't like my wrists.
I don't wear earrings because I don't like my ears.
I think I look too top heavy in scarves and fear I look like I have a double chin.
Tights make me very aware of every piece of fat being smashed into each other.
And I don't wear anklets because it's no longer the 90's.

I think that's why I'm obsessed with coats and bags-
they're cute no matter your size or shape.

Do you have any weird accessory phobias?
How do you style your LBD?

Author's note:
I'm rereading this post and realizing what a nut I sound like.
This chica needs to loosen up a bit.

Tiffany,

You are WAY TOO HARD ON YOURSELF!! Seriously, I'm hoping a plane and following you around for a week telling chanting, "your perfect, your perfect, your perfect...!" You have cute little wrists and double chins... not there!! I admit to doing the same form of torture to myself. Not sure why us women have to beat ourselves up the way we do. I'm blaming glossy mags and the media!!

Your ears... perfect. Your wrists... perfect. Your chin... perfect. So many girls would kill to look like you. You are beyond beautiful.

Love you!! xoxo

you look hot in that dress! also, i think a simple delicate bracelet and studded earrings would look amazing....give them a go, you might change your mind! also...nude patent heels would also be a good addition!

As a fellow dancer I understand you being hard on yourself. I am less fond of anklets, though I do wear rainbow coloured beaded hand jewellery. What's not too like about ears? Or am I missing the obvious point here?;-)

I adore this set! I just through in some fun shoes ;)

Belts and shoes are my go-to - also, an awesome cocktail ring. I think that the key to successfully accessorizing a little black dress is to enhance it, as opposed to overwhelming it with too many extras.

P.S. An anklet would look awesome on you. Despite the fact that its not the 90s, a super subtle, simple gold chain anklet can still work as a gorg accessory - mainly because it's so unexpected. :)

cute dress-- and you look great in it! i love statement necklaces to dress up a LBD or a cute skinny belt. xoxo jillian:: cornflake dreams

I'm cracking up at the anklet remark. I have a deep rooted hatred for those, and toe rings. Eww.

I think shoes and a cute clutch are the best way to accessorize a black dress. Maybe even a bright lipstick?

I like to accessorize with a chunky necklace or just bright pumps, not too much, I don't like the heavy look. BTW I don't watch Mad Men either and I'm not ashamed to say it (at least I tried, back when Season 1 was out, but couldn't handle the heavily choreagraphed and studied dialogues, set decoration and prescribed lifestyle) I like a bit smudge in my tv series.

Necklaces are my favorite accessory. I tend to steer clear of earrings because I'm allergic to everything but gold so my ears get itchy. And I don't like bracelets because I tend to fiddle with them.

You could also go with a really fun shoe to spice it up.

Try some really bright shoes or sunglasses or a metallic skinny belt!
That said, I also think you should try some of the accesories you are wary of, you might surprise yourself. It is inspiring bloggers like YOU who have helped me out of my comfort zone fashion-wise and also helped me on my journey of self acceptance. Please drink your own medicine, Tiffany...you are STUNNING!!!

First off, you're beautiful, dear. A smile should be the first accessory you choose :)

I echo some of the suggestions already list: I love delicate gold details and pearls with little black dresses. For jewelry, perhaps just some simple pearl studs and a single pearl necklace, but I would definitely go for a bold, sexy heel.

you always look great my dear! pearls are always the best companion of any black dress

You always look beautiful! I have a fear of wearing high heels. I buy them, I want to wear them, and then I put them on and feel like a giant. I'm 5'10" barefoot, and feel like I'm towering over people when I wear heels. My grandmother is also tall (and use to be a model in the 1930's) and always tells me not to be afraid of my height and that heels are for everyone. But for some reason I HATE towering over people.

You aren't missing much with Mad Men. It's super depressing. I love this dress on you. I would add one of those silk flower belts at J Crew if I were to accessorize it =)

I love jewellery, especially earrings, but sometimes I just go for a great necklace b/c I may not want to be bothered with a ton of accessories. I think it's great to go for a bag the way you've done here. I love this LBD on you! -xx

I definitely don't accessorize enough. I always stick with the same staple jewelry and rarely go for anything clunky or too show-y. I think simplicity is key when you're way something busy and the opposite if you're wearing something minimal. Now it's just a matter of practicing that!

Oh Tiffany, really!?! That's horrible that you have so many phobias. You're so gorgeous and I'm sure you'd look amazing in all you mentioned.

I'm a big accessorizer myself. Scarves, rings, bracelets, clutches are all my friends.
I would accessorize it with a cute belt and shoes. Probably animal print in my case or color.

But I think you did a fabulous job :) xoxo

Hey, you've got a necklace on- you already have me beat. I have only worn earrings for prom and my wedding, haven't worn a necklace since I took off my simple one stone pendant while I was in labor with Daphne. I have a wedding ring...and a diaper bag! woo hoo! I wish I was an accessory girl. Just never have been.

Beautiful, Tiffany!!!

p.s. any word on when my guest post will be up?

First off - I think you look great in that dress! For me, I absolutely hate wearing bracelets. I don't really know why, b/c I need to wear my watch everyday. But if I added a bracelet, I would find it completely annoying! :)

Barbara said...

You look amazing! To make it a bit more young and edgy, you might add some really long, layered necklaces, a different belt, and colorful peep-toe pumps.

Anna said...

ha. :) I stick with earrings mostly. But if you've got a bag and some killer shoes (which you have), you're set! does nail polish count as an accessory?

You have body issues? You have body issues! It's ridiculous, because you are absolutely stunning! I am thrice your size, and I don't really have accessory phobias.

Hope you find something to go with the dress. It's a lovely dress and fits so beautifully.

yes I think to,you are a bit to hard to yourself. I don't see anything wrong with your wrists or anything like that ;-)

and let me tell you one thing: christina hendricks has definitely more fat-pourcentage in her body than you have ;-) me too! if you are a dancer, it's naturally that you are very critical with your body, but you don't have any reason for being that - you are perfect!
and I love how you styled this dress in a simple way!

You are hard on yourself. I have noticed absolutely nothing wrong with any of those aspects that you deemed "unlikeable" about yourself. Ridiculous.
But you are right about one thing. This dress is a winner!

I style my LBD with a brown belt that has gold/bronze accents. Or I'll wear tights and my rain boots with it. Or I like to put a cardi and then my brown belt with it. I like mixing nuetrals a lot actually...

OMG! you have so many accessory phobias! they are making me laugh! and they are making me realize that i have some, too!

i don't like to wear anything too DAINTY, as i am a big girl and i feel like a hippo and out of proportion of a necklace is too tiny and dainty. same thing with purses -- if they are too small they look out of proportion on my and i can't do it!

ok, so clearly i have accessory phobias too! but i like to think that we just gravitate towards what looks best on us? maybe?
