I like pies, I like cakes.
I wanted to make an easy dessert to bring to summer parties so
I decided to combine pies and cakes to see what might happen.
Disclaimer-
My favorite part about pie is the crust.
But I'm lazy and crusts can be tricky.
I wished there could be an easier way.
Oh, there is, my friends.
There is.
Recipe is easy:
1. Make half a box of cake mix according to the directions and put a thin layer of it in a greased pan.
You might have a lot of prepared cake mix leftover depending on the size pan you use.
2. Dump drained canned cherries, blueberries, or pie filling on top.
Or fresh berries. Fresh berries are always yummy.
3. Top with rest of reserved dry cake mix and drizzle with melted butter.
For funsies, you can add oatmeal to the 'crumb topping.'
4. Bake in 350 degree oven until the top is browned, about 40 mins.
This one was done with pie filling.
It was the most 'pie-like' but also very sweet.
This was done with drained Morello Cherries from Trader Joe's.
Not as sweet as pie filling and more like a crumble.
The top didn't get as golden brown as I wanted but Mr. Branflake fell in love at first bite.
He demanded I make him more.
This one was done with frozen blueberries.
So yummy for summer!
And, the top got that golden brown color I was looking for. Finally!
Update:
I just googled 'pie cakes.'
They don't exist.. until now!
When they get famous,
you can tell people you saw them first on Dancing Branflakes.
I'm so kidding.
The likelihood of food invention on this blog is about as likely as seeing me in a pair of skorts.

what do you have against skorts?! lol :] I like pie, and I like cake too.. but I'm with you on the crust thing, it's my favorite part of the pie.
What a delightful looking and sounding idea! I wan to try!
This looks so yummy! I love crumbly cake mix crusts--my mom used to make cobblers like that and they were seriously one my favorite things ever!
Why hello best of both worlds! Pie AND cake? YES!
This is a lifesaver. I wasted so many precious minutes of my life before Thanksgiving last year making and throwing out and remaking pie crusts. I finally made an edible one, but I'm liking the pie cake option much better!
Morgon- that makes me so happy! In my mind I thought, "This post could be really lame or kind of helpful." Glad you like!

totally pinned this. :) They look amazing!
ok, i have an easy recipe you might like. i learned this from my mom eons ago. the recipe is probably from the 1950's (no, i am not that old, but my mom is -- lol).
cherry crunch (going from memory here, so it might be a hair -- ew -- off)
pour 2 cans of cherry filling into 14x11x 2 pan. spread out evenly. drizzle a little lemon juice on top -- maybe a tbsp or two.
melt a cube of butter. pour it into a bowl. add a white cake mix to the melted butter. stir it up with a fork, but leave it chunky. take the butter/cake mixture and crumble it on top of the cherries. bake at 350 until top begins to brown (TAN) lightly.
EaT!
it is easy and pretty tasty!
p.s. you can add slivered almonds to the top of the crust, but to me they just get in the WAY of the crumbly crust. and isn't it all really about a delicious crumbly crust? yes, it is. l ol
um, PIE CAKE! i will totally say you started this. it is SO genius. and cherry? the best choice for filling, obviously. :)
What a great idea. I've not come across pie cakes before - you better patent this!
Looks just so good and we bet it dose taste amazing!
All the best
