The Art of Being Attractive

"Don't wear knee length dresses," they say. "It'll make you look frumpy."

"Lengthen your legs by wearing skirts above the knee," they say. "You'll look squat with dresses that long."

Whatever. I'm not about to sacrifice modesty so I can look taller. That's what heels are for. And what's wrong with being short, anyway?

And, really... is showing more skin going to make me look less frumpy? More elegant? More feminine? Skinner?

No. In fact I would dare say it does the opposite.

I'm probably preaching to the choir (you all are so classy!), but it gets under my skin when people have fashion rules, especially when those rules promote showing more skin.

We are women. We have beautiful bodies. We are not objects on display. We are not 'things' to be altered or manipulated to fit an aesthetic. To even suggest I wear a low cut top or higher hemline to make my body look better is ridiculous.

Women are naturally beautiful. We don't need to show skin to be attractive.

Case in point: this dress. It's long sleeved. It goes below my knees. It's not too tight. And my boobies are inside my top. And you know what? Mr. Branflake's eyes bulged out of his head when I walked out in it. I love an uncontrollable stare from him.

But more than that, I feel elegant in it. I feel like I could walk into a room full of beautiful women wearing low cut tops and short hemlines and not question my womanhood. Good clothes will make you do that. A positive outlook on your life will always make you do that.

Dress: Dorothy Perkins. Shoes: Nine West. Gold Necklace: Modcloth
Clutch was a gift from an amazing friend. I bought the cuff at the Aloha Festival on Saturday for $6!

Bottom line:
Women are naturally beautiful.
You don't have to wear revealing clothes to be your most attractive.
You just need to be yourself.

Great dress! (Plus I love that its from a UK brand!) I hate style rules, however we small people always need heels... a rule I know I break a lot.

There's so much truth to what you say. I just try to respect everyone's individual choice. I like wearing shorts (to work, fancy functions etc) because I like my legs. I ensure I look 'decent' and respectable and dress appropriately for the occasion but I do dress for my body type and love wearing certain types of clothes. But I would be the last person to say that that's how others should dress :) xoxox

Sophistication and elegance trumps a lot of skin - that's something I feel like I learned from Coco Chanel; and it is so true. You prove it with this outfit, Tiffany. You look so chic and lovely...the perfect image of elegance. I also love the silhouette of this dress - so stunning on you!! :)

You look SUPER elegant in this dress, Tiffany - and the heels!! I have no morals about showing skin, but sometimes I would appreciate seeing less, just for aesthetic reasons.

Amen! Here are my fashion rules ;)
1)Cut
2)fit
3)Approprateness for event
4)Do you feel good in it? or its it wearing you?

You are seriously rocking that dress. I'm with you 100% on the modesty vs attractiveness thing. As another shorter person, I honestly think I look better in skirts just below the knee than just above. I have stocky little legs and just below the knee makes them look much more feminine than a tiny little skirt would.

Amen! I definitely own some clothing pieces that some would call "frumpy" but I feel good in them, I feel like me. That dress looks stunning on you!!

Amen! I think a woman who wears what she wants and loves herself, rules be damned, in the most attractive kind of woman.

And you look damn good, not frumpy in the least.

You. Look. HOT. My jaw dropped when the page opened - no joke.

Elegance and class trump skanky wear anytime. There is sexiness to mystery - the ol' "leave a little to the imagination" cliche. I'm tall but a knee length pencil skirt will still blow a mini out of the water, every time.

As a modest dresser, I can't agree more. I think my own fashion rules actually promote showing less skin. You look amazing in that dress and I think that length actually lengthens you :)

My goodness, MY eyes practically bugged out of my head–you look sensational in that dress! My mom's only fashion rule was balance–a skirt above the knee should be balanced with more coverage up top, for example. When I was younger I showed off a good bit of skin, but the truth is, I was just anxious for someone else to notice me, to think I was pretty. Now that I'm more comfortable being myself, I don't dress for attention–because really, who wants to get heckled by strangers?

@Lena- Exactly. Amazing how much self-confidence can change us.

I lost a lot of weight due to a long story and recently gained back 5 lbs. While a lot of people commented that I'm 'untoned', I have cellulite now, no abs....but this body, these boobs, will help me start our family. And I may not look good in a bikini, but I'll look awesome in a dress--even if it's not low cut.

You're beautiful. And classy.

Meri said...

I agree. I often feel more dressed up and sexy in wintertime clothes because I feel more confident in those textiles (wool and denim and tweeds and all of those fabrics just feel classy). I also feel like when once every week or two when I wear boots with a big wedge heel (they are pretty tall but very comfortable) I feel confident with a little extra height. I wish I didn't care about height, but it feels good to literally "walk tall. "

Couldn't have said it any better! I want people looking at my face, not my derriere, breasts, or the tops of my knees. Modesty commands respect.

I do love this dress on you! It is the perfect cut. Classic is preferred! :)

I will admit, I do like to wear low cut dresses from time to time.. Not in an obscene way. I think it can be pulled off.. But there are oh so many examples of how it can look trashy!!!

Goodness, you look great in that dress! It fits you so perfectly--no wonder your husband loved it! And those heels?? The perfect way to add spunk. Love it. And totally agree about pressuring women to look "sexier" . . . whatever that means.
