I Love Running.

This is not a joke. I actually have fallen in love with running. This is coming from a person who loathed it her entire life. This is coming from a person who literally thought she was going to die after running a half a block last year. This is coming from a person who once bought running shoes because they looked cute.

I have no clue what's happened (I just one day decided to start running), but I love it.

Pretend running on the beach three years ago.
That was about all the running I could do back then.
Granted, I am not a 'runner.' That would be like a slap in the face to all legit runners. I'm on the treadmill for thirty minutes at a 6.0 mph pace for four to five days a week. For some, that's nothing. But for a girl with extremely short legs (and hence a very small stride) and a history of hatred for running, I'm pretty darn proud of myself.

I know I know... many people say running is bad for dancers because of the pressure it puts on the joints. But, to be honest, I haven't felt that. Maybe because I've supplemented my running with weight training, but my knees and ankles have never felt better. And I'm very conscientious of stretching my 'quad' muscles after a run so they won't bulk up. (Bulky quadricep muscles are a big no-no for dancers).

Before last week's photo shoot, I made sure to fit in a run to help me feel strong and empowered about my body.
It totally helped! The endorphins running through me lasted all day long.
I have no clue where this running will take me. I'm thinking my first 5K and then eventually a half marathon. But I don't know. I'm just still a little in shock how much I've been enjoying my workouts and I'm taking it one day at a time.

So far, I haven't wanted to scream at the treadmill and/or die. I'm taking this as a good sign.

Any tips for a newbie runner?

so much of running is mental! when you think you can do things, you'll be amazed at what you actually do :).

a little bit every day goes a long way. and cute running clothes helps also :)

when you're in the DMV area, there are a TON of running groups which is 1) good motivation, 2) a good way to get to know more people. and the cherry blossom 10-miler in DC is a BEAUTIFUL course to run. something to look forward to :)

oh i miss running! i haven't been able to find the time to get out right now, so all my workouts are from home, and i miss it so! i found the treadmill was easier on my joints (i have bad hips), and once i got pregnant i was able to run comfortably up until month 8... i stopped because of the scarred looks i got at the gym! ha!

you run tha much a week-you are a runner...well i think so anyway. a friend once said you can call yourself a runner after your first race...there is no mention of how far or fast this race needs to be..do it..while you are motivated and in love with it!

i tore my knee pretty bad YEARS ago and it still bothers me - just when i get my jog pretty steady by knee gives out and so running is something that will never work for me - and i NEVER enjoy it either! - i walk A LOT and i try to jog - but i need to be so careful with my knee - stinks! - so yea with ALLL that said, no advice from me!

Yay! I love running too. Finishing any event, big or small, is an awesome accomplishment! I'm no expert but a good tip I've used is to rotate shoes (like have a few pairs) to avoid things like plantar fasciitis etc.

Dude that is a LOT of running. You are a runner!I got to love running at uni, when I could run in the park or on the streets in the evenings. At home, now I'm working, it's much harder to do, but I WILL get into it when it's lighter in the evenings! x

I'm not a runner either but I have been running more recently (still not much of a fan though haha). So far, what's helped me is to take it a little at a time and grow from there. And definitely stretch! haha

You're doing so well! That stride looks huge on the beach ;).

Coming from someone who runs for funs... I say: Go slow when you want and fast when you can. There's days where you'll feel like running is a chore and those days I do interval training, then there's days where you feel like running is your bestfriend. Run as far as you can and don't stop till it's enough.

I love pinteresting running exercises and ways to mix up running routines. Lastly, be sure to do a fun run. There's so many of them these days. I'm doing one in a couple weeks called the "Jail Break." It's an obstacle course. But I've done "Color Me Rad" and the "Gladiator."

As long as you're on a treadmill, your joints will be better off than the actual element, but I LOVE running outside.

I just stumbled on your blog and at a good time too! I've been trying to motivate myself to run (bought cute shoes!), but after a half a block I literally thought I would die. I'm glad to hear it is a process and someday I just MIGHT love it. Now, how long did it take you to run more than a block without feeling like passing out? ;)

I tried running once. Definitely not for me. I've got janky knees and they definitely can't take the impact. Love your beach running pic!

Yay! I sure miss running. It was time for me, time to think, to process, to get out the bad juju. I ran a couple 10k races and felt fierce (my times were mediocre at best, but I was still proud of me)... But then one day I felt a sharp pain in my knee, so I stopped for fear of messing up my dance plans, and have not laced up my running kicks since. Maybe, just maybe, I'll venture out again in the near future... Thanks for the courage, Branflake.

I run because it's healthy. There was a time I loved it; I'm trying to get back into it. I hurt my hip and took two months off and that made backsliding from my routine of running at least 1 hour a day 5-6 days a week super easy. Your post came at the perfect time. I can use all the inspiration I can get!

That's more running than some "runners" do you know. And if you're running 6mph for half an hour that's 5km right there (or just shy of it), so no reason you can't get a "real" race under your belt. Good for you!

Crazy and amazing! I've always despised running (two ripped tendons made walking pretty tough!) but you've inspiring me to lace those sneakers back up and give it a try!

I'm proud of you girl! I'm NOT a fan of running, but I try and make up for it on the bike. So, does that stretch the quads thing work for all activities? A lady at the bike shop asked me the other day how to avoid getting big, bulky legs and I wasn't sure how to respond...

years and years ago i used to run. wellllll more like jogging. but that has tapered off. lol. BIG TIME. maybe someday i will try again, but i doubt it. walking suits me just fine. ALTHOUGH a couple of weeks ago i was out with the bf and his kids, and i got the urge to run with one of his sons. it was rather hilarious and rather short-lived and FUN. so i know the appeal! :)

Go on-line and find a "fun run" you want to do. If your interested in doing something before you move, my favorites are the ones that take place around Land Park area. Lots of shade and pretty flat course. Start simple. Find the joy and your own pace. And get GOOD SHOES. Hey, if I can do it, so can you.

I wish I was a runner. I think you are going to inspire me.

Totally smiling right now because I can relate!!! When I was younger I would walk/ run 5 miles a day and do core training ... Over time that stopped and now I'm wanting to start it back up again. I felt my best/strongest then.

Keep it up and I have no doubt you'll be doing a 5k in no time!!!

PS- thanks for all of the great posts, they are exactly what I needed to see today!
